Family Summer Fun in Vancouver

Summer is a fantastic time to live in Vancouver. Between the beaches, the parks and the mountains, there’s always something great to do outside.

Unless your kids are bored.

To stave off the inevitable “I’m boooooooooored”, here are a few family friendly activities around the city.

We all know about Movies in the Park, Celebration of Light and Pride, but here are a few lesser known, and more importantly, FREE events.

Music in the Park

Every Friday and Sunday in July, Vancouver Parks and Rec, in conjunction with the West End Community Centre, is putting on free concerts! Check the link above for performance listings.

YVR’s Take Off Fridays

Believe it or not, YVR puts on a free family day every Friday in the summer. Friday July 11th is an especially fun day, with the Paper Airplane Competition for all ages!! It may be your only chance to get paper airplane tips from an actual aerospace engineer.

Fridays in August include an emergency response team demonstration, perfect for kids who love fire trucks and sirens. You can even park at YVR for $5 between 11am-3pm, or better yet, take the Canada Line directly to the airport.

YVR Take Off Fridays are a great way to beat the heat as well as enjoy DJs, local musicians, balloon artists, mascots and face painting!

Carnival del Sol

If you haven’t had your fill of street fests, Saturday, July 5th and Sunday, July6th brings Carnival del Sol to Granville street. Enjoy Latin music, cuisine and folk dancing!

July 6th Fire Hall Open House

Fire Hall No. 1 – 900 Heatley Ave

Fire Hall No. 4 – 1475 W.10th Ave

Fire Hall No. 3 – 2801 Quebec St

Free for all ages! Vancouver Fire and Rescue is welcoming the public into their fire halls for the day! From 1pm – 3pm, you can go and meet your local fire fighters and enjoy demonstrations, a Q&A session and refreshments!

Khatsahlano Days

Burrard to McDonald along 4th Ave is playing host to the largest street festival in Vancouver this summer. On Saturday, July 12, from 11am – 9pm, Kits will have 40 food trucks, 50 bands and over 100 vendors, lining the streets.

If you’re taking the kids, be sure to hit up the Family Zone for face painting, juggling, and performances all day long!

Caribbean Days

Waterfront Park in North Vancouver comes alive July 26-27 with Caribbean Days! If you like parades, this one is for you. The Trinidad and Tobago Cultural Society of BC puts on this annual festival full of dancing, music, food and wonderful displays of artistry. Get ready to shake your buns because you won’t be able to resist!!
